20 years ago Tubeway Army bassist Paul Gardiner died

February 4th, 2004

20 years ago today, on the 4th of February 1984, bassist Paul Gardiner died of a heroin overdose.

Paul Gardiner was founding member of Gary Numan’s Tubeway Army in 1977 and stayed on as bass player for Gary Numan’s band up until the Farewell Concert in 1981. That same year Gardiner started a solo career with the single “Stormtrooper In Drag”, feautring Gary Numan on vocals and keyboards. Sadly, he started growing apart from Numan due to a heroin addiction. His final recording was a cover of Velvet Underground’s track “Venus In Furs”, which was the first record released on the Numa label as a tribute to the bassist. Paul Gardiner was also one of Gary Numan’s closest friends.

Hello.. To Chris, and Family.. Respect to You all, from Morecambe, Lancashire..
Paul’s quality, taste and style inspired me to play the bass guitarever since i heard
‘Are friends electric,’ and all, when i was at school.. ever since, i try making my music feel to me, how Paul’s music makes me feel, and i kind of study, and even keep most of his bass lines being played.. as a sort of ‘homage’ to the beauty of his work, of course i am not Paul, and i don t try to be, but i believe more people should at least get a chance to discover, and hopefully appreciate and enjoy some great music .. Keep Listening !!
    Thankyou..

Paul created some beautiful and stylish bass lines that made me want to play bass some twenty odd years ago now, I owe a lot to Paul’s influence he was master craftsman and sadly missed. Chris have a happy life and I hope you are very proud of your dad’s achievements.

Paul was a lovely guy very quiet and placid and would do anything for you.
I often think about Paul growing up with him at school and the laughs we had.
    I miss you Paul.

Paul was and always will be a LEGEND.
He may have looked the silent moody type, but that was just his way I guess.

You’ll be forever in our hearts and will love you forever.
I miss you Paul and all that you would have become.

I remember Paul as a quiet older friend who lived at the other end of our row housing on Bevin road. I grew up looking up to him and his mates who all played football on the corner outside my house. I remember when Are freinds Electric came out and he gave me a green vinyl copy along with about 20 other kids in our estate. He was a good guy polite , respectful. I also rember the day he died … a very sad day indeed. I still see his mother when I`m home visiting mine and think of how things could have been for him if not for his addiction. He was a talent that was never fully realised …..
