25 years ago today, on the 28th of November 1980, the infamous New York club Studio 54 was sold for 4.75 million to the city hotel owner Mark Fleischman.

Studio 54, is the most legendary club from New York’s Disco era. The disco opened it’s doors in April 1977 at 254 West 54th Street and was managed by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager. During the late 70’s Studio 54 became the place to go in New York for famous people. Some of it’s most reputed customers were Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson, Cher, Diana Ross, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, and Calvin Klein.

By 1978, the club started going through difficulties because of the constant drug raids from federal police. A year later the owners were charged with tax evasion, obstruction of justice and conspiracy. They were both finally sentenced to 3 years in federal prison and fined for tax evasion.

The new Studio 54 was re-opened on September 1981 and was finally closed by 1986. A film about the club called “54″ directed by Mark Christopher was released in 1998.
