35th Anniversary of “Kraftwerk”
November 1st, 2005 by Koldo Barroso
35 years ago now, in November 1970, Kraftwerk released their debut album “Kraftwerk”, which is considered one of the pioneer works of Krautrock music.
Released on the Phillips label, “Kraftwerk” featured the band formed by Ralf Htter (organ, strings, drums, keyboards, vocals, woodwind), Florian Schneider (flute, violin, percussion, strings, violin, drums, keyboards, vocals, woodwind), Klaus Dinger (drums), and Andreas Hohman (drums). The album was recorded between July and August of 1970 in the band’s new studio in Dsseldorf. It was co-produced and engineered for no money by legendary producer Connie Plank and assisted by Klaus Lhmer.
This was not the first recording of Htter and Schneider though, since they had already recorded the “Tone Float” album, in early 1970, as members of the Krautrock band Organisation.
The sleeve art was designed by Ralf Htter and the traffic cone image became Kraftwerk’s logo during the early years of the band. For the forthcoming shows at art galleries Kraftwerk recruited guitarist Michael Rother and bassist Eberhard Krahnemann.
