December 4th, 2008 by Koldo Barroso

15 years ago today, on the 4th of December 1993, Frank Zappa died of cancer at age 52 after having recorded more than 50 albums.

Frank Zappa is considered one of the most brilliant and creative artists of the 20th Century. Zappa was known for his unique eclectic guitar playing, his fine sense of humour, his sense of absurd, his insatiable experimental appetite, and his multi-productive talent as a composer and arranger. He was also one of the most controversial and provocative artists from the political and sociological point of view by making a critical portrait of the contemporary North-American culture.
Frank Zappa was honoured for his career, along with Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage, at the 1992 New Music Festival in Frankfurt.

15 years ago today we were sitting around listening to music - TV news on with the sound off - and suddenly I noticed Frank soloing on the tube. I jumped up triumphantly because, as anyone in the U.S. knows, FZ was never reported on here. Almost immediately it hit me that they’re only reporting on him because he’s dead… then the dates came up on the screen. And the bitter irony was exposed.

Words can’t express what he meant to me.
