ASCOLTARE “VISCERAL VENDOR”
TRIPEL RECORDS
Ascoltare (fhe Italian word for `to listen’) is the moniker
for Dave Henson from Cambridge, ex-member of post-rock
band Gwei-Lo. Henson has described this project as “Textual melodic
electronica” and I would say that this label is pretty accurate.
The artist builds a series of structures based upon a set of simple melody
patterns (most of them with a trolly mood) using non-harmonic elements such
as micro-sounds. Some of these harmonies have the influence of North European
folk and classical music, featuring samples of instruments such as accordion,
balinesian percussive rhythms, and eastern melodies.
The interest of Ascoltare for the articulation of the musical language itself,
with an influence from the impressionist tradition is very noticeable. In
this Glitch
exercise the artists plays the game of interpreting this musical objects
with a series of unexpected sounds that bring them out of the usual musical
context of traditional European music.
I would say this is an album in the “naive” tradition in that
it would probably please more than one child because of it’s free, colorful,
and easy language. It’s a modern nursery song book for the 21st century.
Along with this album we also received a copy of Ascoltare vs. Keith CD3
limited copy, featuring 2 tracks under the name of “Drugs” and
a nice pacakage including a zip-lock bag containing a white powder substance
that tastes very sweet but doesn’t produce side effects.
