Geir Jenssen aka Biosphere
Born in Tromso (Norway) 1962, Geir Jenssen is mostly known with the name of Biosphere, one of the most important artists in contemporary Norwegian music.
Geir Jenssen was initially a member of the acclaimed trio Bel Canto, with whom he recorded 2 albums in the late 80’s. In 1990, Jenssen left Bel Canto to embark on his solo career and produced a series of works under the name of Bleep.
In 1992, Jenssen released his debut album “Microgravity” under the moniker of Biosphere, becoming one of the pioeer ambient artists from the 90’s. Under the influence of artists such as Brian Eno and John Hassell, his first work was a personal mix of noises and atmospheric layers of sound with trance patterns and hi-tech dance beats. This debut work was followed in the 90’s by three acclaimed albums which forged the unique artic atmospheres: “Patashnik” (1994), “Insomnia” (1997), and “Substrata” (1997).
In 1997, Biosphere joined forces with the British IDM project Higher Intelligence Agency, releasing the album “Birmingham Frequencies” which features their performance at Birmingham. 1999 also saw the release a remix album on Voices of Wonder label featuring remakes of artists such as James and Front Line Assembly.
The 00’s saw the evolution of Biosphere’s sound with “Substrata 2″ (2001), “Shenzhou” (2002), and the minimalistic “Autour de la Lune” (2004).
