Black Dog – Biography
August 16th, 2003Formed in 1989 by Andy Turner, Ken Downie and Ed Handley, Black Dog was one of the most innovative British electronic music bands from the 90’s.
Influenced by synth pop artists such as Human League, Ultravox and Howard Jones, the trio started producing music together in the early 90’s after being involved in the British early rave scene.
After having worked in several project under different aliases, including Atypic and Balil, the Black Dog released their first album “Bytes” in 1992 on Warp Records, which was an influential work in the IDM and electronica scene from the 90’s. Parallely to the Black Dog project, Turner and Handley had another electronic music project called Plaid, which had released the debut album “Mbuki Mvuki” in early 1991.
In 1992, the trio founded Black Dog Productions and started producing a serie of singles where they practised a personal mix of electro, hip hop, and acid techno. During the 90’s, the Black Dog produced several IDM oriented albums, including “The Temple of Transparent Balls” (1992), “Spanners” (1994). “Parallel” (1995), and “Music for Adverts” (1996) and later the Black Dog project was let down in 1997 to give way Plaid.
2002 saw the the last production of the Black Dog, a tribute album to the writer William Burroughs titled “Unsavoury Products”. Black Dog has worked extensively as remixers and producers to other artists, including Bjork, David Byrne, Radiohead, Moody Boys, Hanayo, Placebo, Alter Ego, Laurent Garnier, Blondie, Marilyn Manson, The Creatures, A Guy Called Gerald, and Elbow.
