BODDY/WSTHEINRICH “Moir” is the result of the collaboration between the German musician Bernhard Wstheinrich and the british musician Ian Boddy (founder of the DIN label). This IDM project was originally started by the German guitarist Markus Reuter, an old collaborator of Ian Boddy, starting with a series of improvisations recorded in 2002 and later arranged. |

The result of this work was picked by Wstheinrich, who completed it with a series of overdubs and remixes. Finally the work ended up in the hands of Boddy, who produced and mastered the final result that we can hear. Always inside the IDM and electronica boundaries, “Moir” features different styles based in the digital rhythm and synthesizer sequences. Some tracks are more ambient oriented, such as “Diffractions” which creates a beautiful atmosphere of uncertain mist. Another ambient track is “Diaphragm”, which builds up a pretty twilight stage. The participation of Markus Reuter on the scratch bass is especially present in “Fractalise”, creating an digital organic universe. “Cloister” is definitively the stronger track in the album, where the potent rhythms ride over restless and almost noise ambiences to create a sound that is close to the British underground techno from the 90’s. “Smash & Grab” closes the album with a surprise of analog sequential ambient progressive house that sounds closer to other works released on the DIN label. “Moir” is a work mainly based in the duality of the synthesizer sequences by Ian Boddy and the filtered rhythm programming by Bernhard Wstheinric. In a way it’s all about the recovery of a system of work which was pioneered by German electronic artists like Tangerine Dream and Eberhard Schoener in the 70’s. Considering it was created from a series of improvisations, “Moir” is an IDM work that represents a well structured solid body and is definitively recommendable to all lovers of the most ambient and progressive IDM. |
