The Spitz
£8

Andreas Tilliander (Mille Plateaux/Pluxemburg)
Pest (Ninja Tune)
Ola Bergman (New Speak/Skam)
Jan Anderson (Electronic Desert/CuttingP)

Bell 03 (Electronic Desert)

In a UK exclusive, four maestros of Sweden’s ever fertile electronic music scene fly into town for a one night only special to demonstrate why their highly explosive, diverse and far reaching compositions have elevated them to the top of this global stage at an unprecedented rate.

Andreas Tilliander (aka Lowfour, Mokira, Komp) might be one of Europe’s most active techno-pop musicians, releasing on the ever consistent Mille Plateaux and Pluxemburg imprints as well more divergent forums such as Resopal. He is also the twice Swedish Grammy nominated artist and Manifest winner who has pioneered the so called, ‘clicks & cuts,’ movement that has blossomed over the past few years and whose beautifully rendered takes on mutated pop and dub house have seen the likes of pop luminaries such as Li’l Kim hungry for a touch of his magic on her records.

Ola Bergman, in his first ever live UK appearance, is none other than the co-founder of cutting edge Scandinavian label, New Speak, whose output has been regarded as some of the most innovative in global electronics to date. With subsequent releases on the highly respected Skam imprint, he is a musician and true craftsman whose intricate and wealthy expertise in the music of machines has seen him create some of the most stunningly and emotionally charged pieces of electronica since the turn of the century. He is an artist who commands a captive audience as his rich tapestry of beats, breaks and sweeping synthesis rewire not only your aural sensors, but, your mind, body and soul.

Complementing this already unique and exceptional line-up are Electronic Desert label bosses and long time forefather’s of Northern Europe’s burgeoning electronica scene, Bell 03 and Jan Anderson. Tonight, they will perform a one-off live act fusing the apex of digital technology with vintage benchmarks. Using Final Scratch they will blend a collection of works produced especially for this evening’s showcase with some of their more classic movements. These two gentlemen, in their multitude of production guises have been at the forefront of Sweden’s synthetic era for the last two decades and have been solely responsible for some of the most seminal and sublime moments in techno, electro and electronica that the world has ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Finally, we are especially proud to present Ninja Tune’s Pest in their full band guise who will be performing in a special London show to celebrate their forthcoming record ‘All Out Fall Out,’ which marks a massive departure from their sample based recordings of past to full on live antics. These five gents mix up everything: jazz, hip hop, funk, rock, gargae, techno into a unique blend that is as instantly identifiable as them. They are a mixture of scarily high grade musicmanship and punk ethics and should not be missed.

Where the crisp clean nuances of one of our continents neighbours meets the mill smoke of our swarming metropolis, expect sexy red Nord Leads and nests of super charged wires, cellos and drums, in a night that is sure to go down in the annals of electronic history.

One of the most famous funk singers died on Friday (August 6, 2004) at the age of 56. He was probably best known for his Motown hit in in 1978 “You and I” and another later in 1981 “Super Freak”. He was also considered a peer to many other great artists from the same era including James Brown and Sly Stone.

Although he died at a fairly young age, it has been reported that he died in his sleep of natural causes, presumably heart failure after leaving a troubled life after his success with run-ins with the law and drug use.

Rick’s music can be heard in all kinds of places as samples were heavily used from his work. He will certainly be missed as a huge influence in the funk movement. Neil Pornow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences says, “Grammy winner Rick James was a singer, songwriter and producer whose performances were always as dynamic as his personality. The `Super Freak’ of funk will be missed.”

He is survived by 3 children.

**Update added August 9:

Producer and DJ Dave Audé has also released a statement regarding one of his idols, Rick James. He says, “The entire music community will miss the king of Punk Funk. When he was on, he was on fire. One of my idols, who produced one of the best basslines of all time!!”

The bass line he’s referring to is the one used by MC Hammer among others in his smash hit “Can’t Touch This”.

10 years ago today, on the 29th of November 1992, Cabaret Voltaire played their last show at the Garden Arts Centre in Brighton, UK.

Cabaret Voltaire is one of the most influencial bands in the last decades of electronic music, especially in the genres of Industrial, Synth Pop, Techno, and Experimental. The group was founded in 1973 in Sheffield, UK, by Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder, and Chris Watson. They released their debut album “Mix-Up” in 1979. Chris Watson left the band in 1981 to work in television and later formed The Hafler Trio. After Cabaret Voltaire’s split, Stephen Mallinder emigrated to Australia and Richard H. Kirk continued a reputed solo career.

10 years ago today, on the 5th of February 1993, Twelfth Night’s singer Geoff Mann died of cancer at home in Rochdale, UK, at age 37.

Born Edmund Geoffrey Mann in Carrington, Cheshire, on 11th April 1956, Geoff Mann was the vocalist of Twelfth Night, one of the most reputed Neo Progressive bands from the 80’s. He was also an artist and a priest. In 1974 he began his studies of fine art at Reading university and started collaborating as a roadie and backdrop painter for the band and finally joined them as a vocalist in August 1981 in the band’s appearance at Reading Festival. Mann recorded his first album “Smiling at Grief” with Twelfth Night in 1982. Another studio album “Fact and Fiction” was followed before his departure from the band to pursue a solo career in November 1985, which happened right after 2 sell out gigs at London’s Marquee club which were recorded for the “Live and Let Live” live album.

In September 1984 Geoff Man recorded his first solo album “Chants Would Be A Fine Thing”, followed by “I May Sing Grace”(85). During this period, Geoff was involved for a few months in the band The Earthlings and a year later he finally formed The Geoff Mann Band which evolved into The Bond.

Geoff Mann entered as a priest into The Church of England in 1987 and by 1989 he was ordained Deacon at Manchester Cathedral. During the late 80’s he kept producing music and collaborating with artists such as Marc Catley, The Bond, and his own Geoff Man Band. In 1990 he was ordained priest at Bolton Parish Church and started a new band project called Casino along with Clive Nolan (Pendragon, Arena, Shadowland), but in September 1992 the plans were called off after he was diagnosed of Crohn’s disease, which was later changed to a diagnose of cancer in February 1993.
