Front row, left to right:Hugh Banton (VDGG), Steve Gould (Rare Bird) , David Kaffinetti (Rare Bird), ? , Peter Gabriel (Genesis), Nic Potter (VDGG), Guy Evans (VDGG), Charlie Harcourt (Jackson Heights), ?.

This is another curious picture that I recently found. It’s a family picture from the New Musical Express magazine showing three of the best bands signed to Charisma Label Records during the 70’s: Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird, Jackson Heights and Audience. The picture was taken before a concert featuring the four bands at London’s Royal Festival Hall on the 1st of June 1970.

I couldn’t figure out who is who in the picture, I have some question marks on them. If you can, help me complete their names!

  1. Trevor Williams Says:

Hiya. Trevor Williams from Audience here. I can give you a couple more names for the pic – record producer John Anthony is second from left back row and next to Guy Evans is Charlie Harcourt of Jackson Heights. Regards.

  2. Frank Says:

I can’t see Hugh Banton on the photo?

The guy next to Gabriel, looking to the floor, is John Mayhew, drummer on “Trespass”.

  3. Jim Says:

Hugh Banton is not in the picture.

The concert was June ‘70 at the Royal Festival Hall and it was a double bill of Audience and headliners Van der Graaf Generator. The other bands were just hanging out (Charisma solidarity), they didn’t perform.

I was at the same venue in May ‘05 for VdGG’s triumphant sold-out reunion concert. Afterwards, a massive party was thrown on the second floor of the complex, the very room where this photo was taken. *Everything* is the same, from the columns to the floor carpeting to the entrance way. Pretty amazing!
