Dub – Definition
April 13th, 2002The name Dub defines instrumental re-mixes from mainly reggae vocal recordings.Dub was born in Jamaica during the late 60’s by the hand of Bob Marley’s producer Osbourne Ruddock -aka King Tubby- when he started playing the instrumental backing tracks without the vocals parts and adding effects over it. The other two pioneers producers from the dub scene were Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and Bunny Lee. They also were supposedly to be the first producers to do different remixes of a same track.
Clement Dodd -aka Coxsone- was also one of the first DJs that started copying bits & pieces from different recordings and mixing them together in one song and then adding vocals on top.
Other important dub artists are Mad Professor, Jah Shaka, Spectre, Jacob Miller, and Scientist. Some of the artists whom have also used the dub technique are The Orb, Massive Attack, and Faithless.
