May 13th, 2002

Ethno Techno is the fusion of electronic music and techno with ethnic music from different cultures (African, Western, etc).

Artists like The Beatles, Osibissa, Santana, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Earth Wind and Fire, and Mahavishnu Orchestra pioneered the fusion of rock and ethnic music during the 70’s.

In the UK ethno techno is the result of the mixture of cultures co-habitating in London during the last 4 decades, but the most important presence is the one of the Indian community.

Ethno techno started developing during the mid 90’s under the influence of the effort of producer Peter Gabriel, who in -1982 founded the WOMAD festival to spread African -and ethnic music in general through the Eastern world. He was also founder in 1991 of the Real World label dedicated to ethnic music.

Some of the most popular artists on this genre are Transglobal Underground, Natacha Atlas, Talvin Singh, Asian Dub Foundation, Banco de Gaia, Afrocelts, and Loop Guru.
