Funk music was born in U.S.A during the mid 60’s as a result of the fusion between soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz styles.

The funk sound is characterized by a syncopated and dynamic rhythm, usually marked by the presence of the bass which is often played with the slap technique (using the thumb to hit the strings).

James Brown is told to be the Godfather of funk and soul music. In 1972, Stevie Wonder founded his own label Black Bull Music and released the legendary album “Talking Book” which was one of the most influential albums of the 70’s funk sound.

Other important Funk artists were George Clinton (PFunk, Funkadelic), Sly and the Family Stone, and Sun Ra.

Funk music has an essential presence in numerous electronic and dance styles, such as disco, house, and electro. In the 90’s funk lived a popular revival by the hand of artists like Jamiroquay and Fun Lovin’ Criminals.
