Funkstörung

Duo formed by Chris De Luca and Michael Fakesh in Rosenheim, Germany, 1992. Funkstörung, which in German means “Transmission Interference”, were nicknamed as “the German Autechre”, because of their mix of intricate breakbeats, beautiful harmonies, and a musical background related to the hip hop old skool, and artists such as Black Dog, Kraftwerk, and Juan Atkins’ Cybotron.

Funkstörung originally produced their first work under the name Musik Aus Strom, signing for a six-album deal to the Unit Moebius’ label Bunker Records/Acid Planet in 1994, which was not fulfilled after the label financial problems. This way, Funkstörung used the moniker Musik Aus Strom for their own label releasing a number of IDM oriented EPs.

In 1999, Funkstörung called the attention of the industry with the compilation “Additional Productions” in StudioK7! label, where the band produced a serie of personal versions of artists such as Bjork, Wu-Tang Clan, and Finitribe.

In their following work “Disconnected” they featured the collaboration of Lou Rhodes (Lamb), Sarah Jay (Massive Attack) and Enik. The album also launched their image project, Isolate, when a series of photographs available on their website were edited by the visitors to create the graphics and videos for the album which were later published as the book/DVD combination “Isolated”.

Funkstörung has been one of the most commercially successful IDM and electronica bands of the late 90’s, who won a Grammy award in 1999. De Luca and Fakesch have both released solo albums on their own Musik aus Strom label.
