October 26th, 2004 by Koldo Barroso

John Peel died last night on October 25, 2004 while on vacation in Peru with his wife. He was on holiday when he suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 65.
John Peel is considered legendary for his radio career spanning more than 40 years and had worked on the BBC Radio 1 since 1967 as a dj and also later on Radio 4. John Peel made a huge influence on the whole industry by being known to pick independant music and giving underground and obscure artists exposure. He was known as one of the very first djs to give exposure to punk, hip-hop, and reggae even before they became mainstream.
Gruff Rhys, of the Super Furry Animals, says, “He was very inclusive of all kinds of music, very open-minded, and introduced a lot of diverse music to the public.
“He championed Welsh language music and for years was the only DJ on national radio who was willing to embrace it.
“He was very wary of trends such as Britpop, he was introducing people to drum ‘n’ bass and techno, things that were going on outside of the media.”
Andy Parfitt, controller of Radio 1 also said, “John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death, as are all who work at Radio 1″
“John’s influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable. Hopeful bands all over the world sent their demo tapes to John, knowing that he really cared. His commitment and passion for new music only grew stronger over the years.
“In fact, when I last saw him he was engaged in a lively debate with his fellow DJs over the state of new music today. He will be hugely missed.”
John Peel is survived by his wife Sheila and four children.
