Ryoji Ikeda – Biography

Born in Gifu, Japan in 1966, Ryoji Ikeda is one of the most important minimalist artists in computer based and digital electronic music.

Ryoji Ikeda released his first reference “1000 Fragments” on the CCI label in 1995 and since then started a series of numerous exhibitions and sound instalations. In 1997 he released his first album for the Touch label “+/-” which was followed by “0Å0Ü2C” (1998), “Matrix” (2001) and “op.” (2003). His usually conceptual work is focused towards the use of the tones (sub-basses and ultrasounds) combined with rhythmic elements from radio frequencies and samples. He has also experimented in the field of clicks and cuts.

Ikeda has also appeared in numerous compilations, including “A Fault in the Nothing” (Ash International, 1996), “Modulation” (Caipirinha, 1998), “Modulation & Transformation 4″ (Mille Plateaux, 1999), “99 – 20′ to 2000 series” (Noton, 1999) and “Clicks & Cuts 2″ (Mille Plateaux 2001). He has also worked with musicians like Ralph Wehowsky and Michael Gendreau, and the Cylo project along with Carlsten Nicolai.

Ty-Jir at Progressive Encyclopedia

Enciclopedia Progresiva

My friend guitarist Manoel Macia has told me about this book which was recently published in Spain: ‘Enciclopedia de la Música Progresiva en España’ (Encyclopedia of Progressive Music in Spain).
It seem’s that my first rock band from 1986, Ty-Jir, is featured in the book and the author wrote some nice words on it. That was more than 20 years ago now. We only got to release a tape on Angel Romero’s label Mind Child. The band split soon later but I’m happy to say that most of the members are still making great music.
Thanks for the memory!
