Peter Baumann
Born January 29, 1953 in Berlin, Peter Baumann started his musical career during the late 60’s as an organist in rock and blues bands such as Burning Touch and The Ants.
In 1971, Peter Baumann became a member of the German electronic group Tangerine Dream. Though Baumann was a self-taught musician, his skills to play atmospheres with a Farfisa organ connected to reverbs and other effects helped to configure the legendary floating sound of the German band in the 70’s.
In 1976, Baumann released his first solo work, “Romance ‘76″ was a fusion of space rock, electronic music and avant-garde music, gaining international success.
Peter Baumann left Tangerine Dream in 1978 after 9 albums, embarking on a fairly successful solo career as a musician and producer. At the time, he discovered the yet unpublished electronic works from ex-Tangerine Dream memberConrad Schnitzler and supported him to get them released on his label. He also opened the Paragon Studios in Berlin, in which he produced artists like Cluster and Joachim Roedelius. During the rest of the 70’s, Peter Baumann released several solo works, including “Baumann/Koek” (1978), “Trans Harmonic Nights” (1979), and “Biking Up The Strand” (1979).
In 1980, Peter Baumann sold his Berlin studio and moved to New York and founded his own electronic label called Private Music which had artists such as Suzanne Ciani, Eddie Jobson, Patrick O’Hearn, Yanni and John Tesh. Private Music also released four Tangerine Dream albums during the late 80’s and early 90’s, including “Optical Race” (1988), “Miracle Mile”, “Lily On The Beach” (1989), “Melrose” (1990) and “Private Music” (1992).
In 1981, the solo album “Repeat Repeat” marked a change in Peter Baumann’s career oriented to synth pop. The following albums “Realtimes” (1981), “Daytime Logic” (1981) followed the same track, until “Strangers In The Night” (1983) which featured a successful synth pop version of Frank Sinatra’s classic.
In 1992, Peter Baumann founded the band Blue Room along with ex-Reflex singer John Baxter and Paul Haslinger (Tangerine Dream). Later in 1994, he sold Private Music to BMG records. In 1996, a retrospective album “Phase by Phase” was released and Peter Bauhman has been inactive in the music industry since.
