Robert Moog

Robert Moog, is considered as inventor of the modern synthesizer. Born in New York City 1934, Robert Moog has a special place in the history of electronic music for being a pioneer in the invention of synthesizers and electronic instruments. He studied Physics and Electrical Engineering, and in 1954, founded the R. A. Moog Company for the design and production of electronic musical instruments, producing a model of The Theremin and helping Raymond Scott on the circuitry of the first synthesizer, called the Clavivox. In 1964, Robert Moog produced the first modular synthesizer, with the collaboration of composer Wendy Carlos and in 1970. He produced the very first commercial portable synthesizer, the legendary Minimoog, which influenced the whole history of electronic music and completely changed the shape of popular music that was entering in a new electronic era.
Robert Moog’s most accomplished modular system was the one built for keyboardist Keith Emerson in 1971, which was developed during the forthcoming years. In 1971, the name of the company was changed to Moog Music, Inc, and in 1973 became a division of Norlin Music. During the 70’s the company produced a wide range of popular synthesizers, including the Prodigy, The Liberation, and The Polymoog. In 1978, Robert Moog moved from New York State to North Carolina founding Big Briar, Inc. for the design of electronic music equipment such as performance control devices, theremins, MIDI interfaces, and electronic musical instrument kits. In 2002 the company once again became Moog Music. Robert Moog died on 21st of August 2005 in Asheville, N.C. at the age of 71. After his death, his family established The Bob Moog Foundation dedicated to the Advancement of Electronic Music.
