Soundscapes – Definition
July 13th, 2000Soundscapes is a style of ambient music characterised by the use of sounds designed to create a musical environment or atmosphear.
The origins of the soundscapes as a genre are in the musique concrete and composers like Pierre Schaeffer, as well as avant-garde composers who pioneered the use of granular synthesis, such as Barry Truax and Luc Ferrari. Another important element in the soundscapes music is the use of the loops technique, which was pioneered by during the 20th century by composers such as Erik Satie, John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer, Pauline Oliveros, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
The soundscapes genre was born during the 90’s influenced by the new technical possibilities of a new array of digital instruments such as sequencers, samplers, harmonizers, and especial digital looping devices such as Boss RC-20 Loop Station.
Robert Fripp, Chris Watson, Rob Levit and Michael Rüsenberg are some of the artists to explore this genre today.
