The first Theremin movie
November 24th, 2006The first movie in history which featured a Theremin was the Soviet film “Odna” (1931), directed by Grigorij Kozincev and Leonid Trauberg. This happened to be the first sound film of all Soviet films. The movie doesn’t feature conversations but sound effects. “Odna” was originally intended to be performed with an orchestral score by Dmitri Shostakovich but the project was turned down by the political authorities and the film was archived in the Lenfilm complex. The archives at the Lenfilm complex were later partially destroyed during the siege of Leningrad and much of the film score was lost except for 8-minute from the original reel. In 2003, Mark Fitz-Gerald completed the restoration of the original score, which was first performed in the Netherlands.
