Underground Resistance - Biography
August 16th, 2003 by Koldo BarrosoUnderground Resistance has been considered the most influential American band in the history of techno music, and probably the most politically oriented.
Underground Resistance was formed in 1990 by the renowned Jeff Mills and Mike Banks -aka Mad Mike-, Robert Hood, and Alan Oldman, who created their own label label under the same name. The band adopted a politically incorrect image as a frontal opossition to Ronald Reagan’s conservative era, practising an innovative fusion of hardcore beats, garage, artcore and electro funk. Underground Resistance’s early works were a combination of Motown and Chicago soul, with lo-fi early techno. Underground Resistance initially worked with the collaboration of Juan Atkins, producing some of the classic Detroit house tracks, such as “Living For The Night” and “Waveform”.
In 1991, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood quit the band, allegedly for political reasons, and founded Axis Records to pursue one of the most reputed careers in the history of electronic music and the band remained as a duo with the collaboration of the DJs Alan Oldham. During the early 90’s the sound of the band became more oriented to hard techno, jazz and funk sounds, and in 1992, after numerous EP releases, they released their first album “Revolution for Change”.
In 1998, Robert Hood quit also and he was replaced by DJ Rolando and James Pennington to release the last Underground Resistance’s studio album “Interstellar Fugitives”.
