Legendary British Progresive Rock band Van Der Graaf Generator will play live at London’s Royal Festival Hall on May the 6th. This is the first performance in the last 27 years. Tickets for the show are already sold out. European dates are already programmed for June and July including UK, Italy, and France.
Van Der Graaf Generator were formed back in 1967 and they were one of the most creative and innovative bands from the 60’s and 70’s who pushed the boundaries of Rock music with an experimental insight. The reunion features Peter Hammill (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Hugh Banton (bass, keyboards), Guy Evans (drums), and David Jackson (sax). This reunion was inspired by Peter Hammill’s solo gig at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in February 2003 when he was performing some old material from VGG’s "Still Life" album. In September 2003 the members of the band met at west London’s Novotel Hotel and they set another meeting for February 2004 at Pyworthy in North Devon, but the plans were postponed after Peter Hammill’s heart attack.
The band has announced that this reunion is not an exercise in nostalgia and no old Van der Graaf material will be played since the band has been jamming and wrote several new numbers. Peter Hammill has also worked to put together a double CD of new material for release in the first quarter of 2005. This the first reunion of the band in the last 17 years. years.
Peter Hammill has said in a press release: "I was getting constant offers regarding a reunion, including one from the South Bank. Until then I had never taken them seriously; but now it seemed as though there might be some interest. We talked and we realised that we met more often at the funerals of former members of our road crew. So if it was to be undertaken, it should be while all four of us were still alive!"
